Well, the great news is you can. Although Astrophotography poses a unique set of challenges, with the right guidance, it doesn’t have to be difficult.
Our Dark Sky Astrophotography Tour is designed for those photographing the night sky and Milky Way for the first time, right through to those who want to take their night sky photography to the next level.
Dark Sky Photography Tour
Discover an exclusive, star-studded adventure in the Murray River Dark Sky Reserve.
This private property, complete with towering sculptures, gnarled trees, and dramatic rock formations, offers a once-in-a-lifetime foreground for capturing the stars and mesmerising Milky Way.

Tour Outline
1. Meet and Greet at Lobethal Bakery (Woodside)
- Kick things off at 6:00 PM with a coffee, soft drink, or treat of your choice.
- We’ll run through the evening’s itinerary and get to know one another in a relaxed setting.
2. Journey into the Reserve
- Hop aboard our luxury Staria for a comfortable drive to the private property.
- Capture a stunning sunset among sculptures, trees, and rock formations—perfect foregrounds for your astrophotography later in the night.
3. Grazing Platter & Night Sky Session
- Enjoy a casual meal under the glow of twilight on a hilltop vantage point.
- As darkness deepens, our expert guides will walk you through capturing the Milky Way and star-filled skies above this extraordinary landscape.
4. Finish back at the Lobethal Bakery (Woodside)
- We'll transport you back to our starting point, finishing up at around 11pm.
What to Bring
- Camera (wide-angle lens between 10–35mm recommended)
- Tripod
Let us know if you need to borrow any photography gear for the night. We will do our best to source it for you.

- Non-Refundable: Your booking secures this exclusive spot.
- Date Changes: Allowed with at least 7 days’ notice.
- Transfers: You may transfer your booking to someone else any time before the workshop (please email [email protected] to arrange this).
- Weather: If weather forces cancellation (e.g. full cloud or rain), we’ll offer an alternate date.

With over 25 years as a professional photographer, John is experienced and super passionate about photography and sharing his photography skills and experiences with others.
Whether it's capturing the Milky Way, a thunderstorm literally lighting up the night sky, or an epic wildlife safari, John’s your man. John started Adventure Art Photography to inspire others to experience that same creative learning through photography adventures.
John lives in the Adelaide Hills with his wife, Alicia, and 2 sons who also enjoy their photography.

Good weather is important for Astrophotography, and we don’t have accurate weather forecasts until the day before the tour. We will notify you by 7pm the day before if the tour is not going ahead. In the event of weather prohibiting your Astrophotography tour from proceeding, we will offer you an alternative tour date.
If clouds do come through on the night, we will wait for them to clear and then resume the tour, or look at alternatives in a different direction. (Some of the very best images are captured on nights like this)

The circle of friendship and support, plus the excellent teaching and opportunities provided by John and Craig made this an unforgettable experience.
This was my first ever photography course road trip and was a birthday present. John and Katie were such wonderful hosts and really go above and beyond to give each individual beautiful life-long memories. Their enthusiasm is contagious and any early nerves were soon replaced by joy and excitement. Meeting new friends and being part of their lives, even for a short time, was so rewarding. I can highly recommend Adventure Art Photography, and I will be returning very soon for another truly beautiful experience.
